Hello,
After the practice on Monday we also discussed the dance we should do. Everyone at the pub at the time agreed this dance should be both interesting and achievable. Hannorah has said she finds it helpful to watch youtube videos of other teams doing the same figures so I've put links after every figure. I've also tried to suggest a few Tommy things to think about feel free to throw other ideas in so we can come up with something good for Sue / Janet to say on our crawl.
Tommy to announce that there is going to be rapper dancing taking place and that it's part of the tradition for her to sign a song...
Walk on to a circle Meanwhile Tommy will be singing a song. The traditional one with 'incarcerated' instead of 'born and bred' etc seems to work fine.
Swords up, step for 8 and clash on 8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgES9_OiMTE&list=UUfBbgQGddiVyGbdyNMDBUlg beginning
Walk the dog (can't find a video of this one) Chance to say something vaguely sensible about us - we're from London and are a new team etc.
back 8 into figure of 8 something like this ;-) http://youtu.be/kbCI8fJnbDY?t=11s
(out into an open ring)
Glass & Haymarket into coach and horses http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akuUc3jmTRk&feature=share&list=UUfBbgQGddiVy… 1'45 - 2'00 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFB-CJ7Gmh4&list=UUfBbgQGddiVyGbdyNMDBUlg 1'25 - 1'45 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgES9_OiMTE&list=UUfBbgQGddiVyGbdyNMDBUlg 1'10 - 1'45
Flying pixies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LchZMM4nf9E&NR=1 3'28 - 3'48 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74hFA7-xryY 0'28 - '45. Could refer to it as flying ravens or make a joke about how we're supposed to fly in this figure but ravens can only hop?! Could also draw attention to our fantastic swirly skirts. Also a chance to do a naming the team joke. Can we think of something original and London / bird themed?
Lock, display. http://youtu.be/kbCI8fJnbDY til 1'22. Encourage the audience to make lots of noise for lock - at DERT
can make sarcastic comments along the lines of 'I bet you haven't seen
anything like this before'.
Spin. 'The louder you shout the faster they'll go' / joke about ravens only being able to fly in one direction.
(out into a walk round) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXDBVS5XpMM 1'05 - 1'10
Hoops http://youtu.be/_ON5OWehABA till 2'00 (though not with the bunched up bit before displaying) Is there something we can liken the hoops to e.g. a particular bridge in London?
Tits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74hFA7-xryY 1'15 - 1'29. 'Now we'd like to show you our tits' - perhaps this is a little crude?!
Curley and 6 person lock http://youtu.be/tvr2bSIxOkw til end but without the letting go of the sword but and into a normal lock. Opportunity for audience participation by pulling some people through the set.
We will be crawling on Thursday 24 January. Hannorah is going to email Thrales to ask them if we can borrow a route. I would like to try and do this dance on the crawl. It would therefore be good if everyone can do a bit of homework and think about what they do in these figures before Monday and for Rachel to start learning the calls.
It's been suggested that we have a slightly longer practice on Monday. I can try and get there at 7.20 to make sure the room is ready to dance in by 7.30 and I'm happy to go on with the practice until 10pm if there are enough people who want to stay a little longer.
At the moment it looks like we'll be able to have the church hall from 1.30pm on both Sunday 3 Feb and Sunday 10 Feb. This isn't yet 100% confirmed but please pencil in these two afternoons. We'll probably finish at around 5.30pm if that's OK with everyone.
That's all from me for now.

Hi everyone,
After the practice last night some of us wrote a short blurb for the DERT programme. It goes something like this:
"Formed in the wake of DERT 2012, Tower Ravens are London's newest, youngest, most attractive (and only) female rapper team. Named after the feathered guardian of the crown jewels, these birds have escaped the confines of the tower and are looking forward to sampling the delights of Burton upon Trent. They don't like to crow too loudly but you'll soon be raven about them!"
In the cold light of day I'm wondering whether the last sentence comes across as witty or just a bit sad. Perhaps we want to keep the crow and raving jokes for the Tommy routine. Anyone have opinions on this?
I think this is the best photo to send - http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10100366043358582&set=oa.43979326608… Anyone object?
Alternatively this one- http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10100366045369552&set=oa.43979326608…
Nic, I think these are both your photos so could you possibly send me the original pictures?
Thanks,

Hi all,
As promised to a couple of you last night, here is an email detailing
how much you all owe the side. This just covers outstanding kit and
subs - I'll cater for DERT separately.
Aisha - £0
Ffion - £5 (net petticoat)
Hannorah - £27 (£15 for main skirt, £12 for unpaid subs)
Janet - £24 (£20 for kit, £4 for unpaid subs)
Jo - £0
Josie - £0
Lindsey - £26 (unpaid subs)
Nic - £0
Nikki - £24 (unpaid subs)
Sue - £0
As always, you can pay by giving me cash at a practice or by
electronic transfer to the following account. As Sue, Nic and
Hannorah have done, setting up a standing order for subs means that I
won't be hassling you every month. :)
Account number: 00380515
Sort code: 070246
Thanks all,
Rachel
PS. Ffion - can you give me your bank details and I'll repay you for
the DERT cheque?
Sue - I still owe you £65 for the second lot of petticoat fabric and
still have a pile of outer skirt material to hand over. Remind me for
next week!
Hi Guys have just noticed on the Friday there are two cheaper trains at present from Euston. The 18.46 and the 19.40 which are both £21.00 single. Is it worth deciding which to go for and doing our own bookings. Loads of cheap trains back on Sunday.

Hi all,
Quick reminder about DERT accommodation. The form will be in the post tomorrow to meet the 15 Jan deadline. If you want to indoor camp please EMAIL ME TODAY to tell me so.
The cost of the travel lodge has gone up but I've found a non-ensuite room for 4 people (2 twins and a bunk bed) in the centre of town. It would be a total of £38.25 each and that price includes breakfast. Anyone interested in sharing?
See you all tomorrow.

If you weren't at practice last night please let us know ASAP if you will be coming as we need to enter the number of dancers on our entry form which has to be submitted by next week. Also, if you have any partners or friends who want to come please let us know as tickets (£5) for them need to be booked on the same form. I think this entitles them to get in to the Saturday evening showcase (all teams do a dance but it's not part of the competition and it's followed by the awards ceremony) and to book indoor camping.

It costs £18 for both nights and includes a light breakfast. The DERT website suggests three budget hotels and one 3 star one. There may be others if you google I guess. Travelodge is the cheapest and most central option and there seem to be doubles still available for £30 and £36 on Friday and saturday respectively. If you want to indoor camp this needs to be booked with you DERT place ie you need to decide where to stay this week.

DERT 2013 - Back to Basics. Back to Burton
DERT is being organised by Ryknild Rabble in Burton upon Trent over the weekend of Friday 8th - Sunday 10th March.
This is what we're planning: Also see our web site http://www.DERT2013.org for more information.
Accommodation
There will be indoor camping at a primary school in Burton, this will include a basic breakfast. If this does not suit you, there are now plenty of hotels in Burton, a Travelodge; a Premier Inn and a Holiday Inn Express to name just three - all within walking distance of pubs and venues, as well as everything else in the centre of Burton.
Saturday:
Main Competition
The main competition will be run in five pubs around the town, with five dances being judged during the day. These pub spots are all close together, so making for an easy walking tour, but the dance space in some of the pubs is tight, so start planning your dance to accommodate this. There will be warm up dance spots as well.
The Spotlight Dance
The Spotlight dance is not part of the main competition, but there will be an additional award for best display dance, judges on this one dance only. The display dance will be at Town Hall and will be scheduled into your main competition programme. There is more space at the Town Hall giving you the opportunity to display some of your more expansive figures.
The Traditional Dance
This dance will take place at the Town Hall after the Main Competition.
DERTy
The Youth Competition will take place at Burton Town Hall during the day, the youth dances alternating with the Spotlight dances, providing the chance for both groups to see each other. The awards for DERTy will be given out at the end of the youth competition.
The evening will be at the Town Hall with a 'showcase' of the teams dancing and the presentation of awards, then time to continue talking and drinking or continuing to dance around the pubs in Burton.
As this is back to basics DERT, we are only providing breakfasts for the indoor campers on Saturday & Sunday mornings and you will have the choice of the many eating establishments around Burton, for your lunch and dinner.
Sunday:
As usual, there will be a Rapper Workshop - hopefully hosted by Saturday's winners. This will take place at the School in the morning.
Then off to the pub (location to be revealed later) for ....... and fond goodbyes....
Put the date 8th~10th March 2013 in your diary and please go to the web site http://www.DERT2013.org for more information.

Hi everyone,
At practice last night we decided that we will go to DERT this year and we will compete. We'll decide next week whether to do a new dance or an edited version of the old dance.
Everyone at practice last night said they were free on the weekend of DERT and would like to come. If you weren't at practice last night please let us know ASAP if you will be coming as we need to enter the number of dancers on our entry form which has to be submitted by next week. I think this entitles them to get in to the Saturday evening showcase (all teams do a dance but it's not part of the competition and it's followed by the awards ceremony) and to book indoor camping.
On which point, there are two types of accommodation available - hotel or indoor camping. Indoor camping will be a space on a school floor where you can put your camping mat and sleeping bag. It costs £18 for both nights and includes a light breakfast. The DERT website suggests three budget hotels and one 3 star one. There may be others if you google I guess. Thanks very much,
