As promised, here's the dance written out
Walk on as normal but with swords pointing down.
Arrive at starting position but face inwards towards other dancers.
Swoosh swords up one by one, starting with number 1, so that they're all touching 3/4s of the way up the sword.
8 bars of music (this is double what we're used to).
Walk round clockwise clashing on the even beats - 8 clashes in total so on beats 2, 4, 6, 8, 2, 4, 6, 8.
Keep walking round putting swords down on OUTSIDE shoulder. The swords should stay flat so don't hold too tightly. Your right hand should rest at or near the inside of your left elbow. Your left arm will be fully extended (or nearly fully extended, depending on the length of your arms!). This lasts for 8 bars.
'Turn out' = single guard in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 taking 8 whole beats to go round the circle and back to place. Remember to put your sword back on your outside shoulder.
Keep walking until 1 calls lock - hopefully 8 beats but will depend on when 1 reaches the front.
In 4 beats get to the lock position and IMMEDIATELY start walking round clockwise - lock as soon as you can and lift the lock up to number 1s nose height as soon as possible after it's locked. Walk round for 8 beats in total (so beats 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4).
By beat 4 you should be in roughly the right place then you have another 4 beats to lower the lock, raise the swords over your heads and turn over your right shoulder to be in an outward facing ring by beat 8.
Step for 2 x straight 8s.
Number 3 walks backwards, 2&4 get dragged back meeting belly to belly in the middle, 1 and 5 do a windmills type thing round the edges, then sweep out into a large open ring. This should take 8 beats so that there's a swoosh back on beat 8.
'Curley' = normal curley but 3 stays on the left side of the set. When 1 is coming through the curley for the 3rd time they call lock.
Lock through to open ring.
'Number 3' = curley where number three goes left, then right, then left.
Lock through to open ring.
'1 and 5' = number 1 crosses over to the right hand side curley circle. Number 5 crosses to the left hand side curley circle behind number 1. They cross back (1 in front of 5) just before going into the lock.
Lock through to open ring.
'2 and 4' = number 2 crosses over to the right hand side curley circle. Number 4 crosses to the left hand side curley circle behind number 2. They cross back (2 in front of 4) just before going into lock.
Walk round with lock at nose height until 1 is at the back of the set.
1 picks up the lock. Everyone peels to either side of 1 and takes 4 small steps forward to be in a line facing the audience. Order from left to right as you look at it = 4, 5, 1, 2, 3.
Step for 2 x straight 8s. Stamp out.
Walk off after number 4.
Congratulations everyone! I was quietly confident that we could get the Leigh set dancing Beadnell by the end of the evening but not even I thought we'd get TWO separate sets through with only minor errors. Very impressive!
Jo took a video of the Leigh set and hopefully she'll get it uploaded this week so we can all revel in how great we are (plus find the points which need fine tuning)!
During business we discussed the next crawl and the fact that football might make it a difficult evening. Becky's going to take a look at the pubs in Whitechapel to see how sporty they seem. The proposed plan of action for 7 July is to meet as early as possible, do a few pubs in Camden and then come to mine and Laura's gig at Green Note which starts at 8.30pm. I put this on the sheet (with incorrect formatting - I need to download the google docs app onto my ipad too!) so please sign up.
So, the plan for next Monday is:
Polish Beadnell: 1) Lindsey, 2) Janet, 3) Becky, 4) Nic, 5) Sue.
procession: 1) Lindsey, 2) Janet, 3) Becky, 4) Nic, 5) Katherine.
Once through Jubilee with crawl sets (if we're crawling) 1)Rachel 2) Laura/Jo 3) Becky/Lindsey? 4) Nic 5) Katherine/Sue
Once through Jubilee with Leigh set: 1) Lindsey 2) Janet 3) Becky 4) Nic/Sinead 5) Katherine/Sue
If there's time we should also teach Katherine Beadnell so there's a back up number for Leigh but, as we didn't get to teaching Nic and Janet the procession bits yesterday, this might be a step too far.
I'll try and type up the Beadnell figures so you can learn it in theory. In the meantime, please can everyone spend this week practicing stepping slowly in 8s? You know the drill - step at the photocopier, when waiting for the kettle to boil, when waiting for a train etc. Who cares how silly you look?!

Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who sent me their thoughts about our summer priorities. It's just a shame you don't all agree with each other!! As you know, I make a plan for every week's practice but I've now attempted to create a plan for the next month, taking into account the various responses. If your name is in the plan please check your diaries asap and let me know if you're going to be on holiday that week. If your name's not on plan, obviously please still turn up!! Beadnell is by far the easiest trad dance, and I think it's easier than our circle dance, so we'll give that a go tomorrow.
See you all tomorrow,
Ffion x

I think we should try and keep practices regular and not skip weeks. I'm sure I could take stepping practice and run through the dance a couple of times. But I do like the idea of a mini crawl taking in the gig as well.

I won't be around 7th July either as I'm on holiday, so I won't be able to lead practice. If the consensus is for the Green Note, that solves that problem!

Re 7th July - can I propose we go to watch Ffion & Laura at Green Note, but if we felt we needed a bit of a practice that night too I could see if we could do a couple of dances at the Edinboro' Castle, or even C.Sharp.

Hi,
I'm not sure whether we have a team for St. Albans next weekend, but if anyone who's not going is willing to lend me their skirt on Monday it'd really help. Thank you.
See you tomorrow,
Sinead

HiI would go for option one. I feel this is ongoing. Option 4 learning a new simple dance or as Hanorah suggests having another look at the Tenterden Dance. Be there with biscuits on Monday. Cheers Janet
