Hi All,
For those going to Bromyard, here's an update on roughly what is happening.
We have currently been asked to do a workshop on the Saturday at 0945 and
the ceilidh spot in the evening at 2100 - both of these will be on the main
site - so short walk from the tent in the morning! Otherwise, we'll likely
have some spots around the town from memory and can find our way to dancing
in pubs! On the Friday night there is the torchlit procession, which at the
moment I have been slightly non-committal as not very many of us were sure
when we would be likely to be arriving. The procession starts at 2030, so
once you've sorted your travel out, if you could let me know yay or nay for
procession if you haven't already. ☺
So... travel. I think I noted before that the easiest option is taking
either the 1523 or 1445 train from London, both of which get you to
Bromyard at 1833 - if you're able to "work from home" on the train, this
would be a good option if taking public transport. The other option
completely by public transport is the 1922 from Paddington which after
waiting about an hour for a bus will get you there at 1225. However, given
that the latter isn't ideal, then the team can reimburse taxis - though
perhaps try and coordinate a group if possible. This brings me onto
getting home, which has the slight difficulty of there not actually being
any buses (except for the 0850) - so again we'd need to look at taxis, or
whether anyone driving could drop people off in Worcester or somewhere on
their way back. I'm not sure who is driving though... The good news is that
the Paddington-Worcester return is £36.15 with railcard (other routes
available)
As it seemed to mostly work with Sidmouth, could you add your travel
arrangements to the Bromyard section at the bottom of the sign-up sheet. If
you happen to be driving and are able to help with any king of lifts on
Sunday / would have space for a person in exchange for petrol money, please
could you add that as well?
In terms of packing things, one thing to bear in mind that whilst it is
pleasant during the day, once sun has gone down, it gets really cold! So
you'll definitely be wanting your hoody, and maybe layers to go under it as
well. 🕶
Thanks,
Hannah
Hello all,
I am presuming planning for this crawl is organised, any idea where guys??
I'm down as a yes for this Thursday but would ideally transition to a no. I've looked at the numbers and it looks more than possible, although we wouldn't be able to do Piccadilly (but without Emma, Katherine would have to be 1 with no prior warning, which seems a tad risky!).
Numbers I have for people to play with:
Jubilee:
1.
Katherine/Rachel
2.
Rachel-Anne/Hannah N/ Hannah TD
3.
Laura/ Hannah N/ Hannah TD
4.
Ellie/ Hannah/ Laura
5.
Rachel-Anne/ Ellie/ Rachel/ Katherine
Westerhope:
1.
Katherine
2.
Hannah N
3.
Hannah TD/Laura??
4.
Ellie
5.
Rachel-Anne
6.
Rachel/Sue/Laura
Rachel I still can't commit to memory what numbers you said for Westerhope! Please slot in as appropriate.
As you guys are basically prepping for Faversham please dance the numbers you feel you need to practice, I believe this is particularly true for Westerhope. Unless I hear otherwise re. numbers by 8 tonight I am going to pull myself from the crawl in the hope that I can rest up before Bromyard!
Sorry for flaking off this AND Faversham. I hope you have an awesome time. Try not to let the outside spots get you down. It's also worth making it clear at each spot that you only have two dances as morris sides assume that every team can dance a never ending variety!
Thanks,
Becky
Hi All,
Hope you all had a good bank holiday weekend, and hopefully no one forgot
it was bank holiday Monday yesterday... though to help with your rapper
withdrawal symptoms, we have a *crawl this Thursday* - watch out for info
coming soon.
*Upcoming events:*
*Faversham* - Sunday 2nd September, see the Faversham email and let me know
if you have any queries / would like me to buy you a train ticket / are
driving and haven't yet told me your reg plate number if you want to use
the free parking.
*Bromyard* - We will be dancing both days, I just don't know the details
yet beyond the workshop and ceilidh spot. As soon as I know more, I'll pass
it on. If you haven't yet let me know about whether or not you'd be there
in time for the Friday night procession, please add it to the sign-up
sheet. More Bromyard info in the Bromyard email, and I'll provide updates
next week/when I have them.
*Sign-ups/New Invites:*
*Belgium,* this is looking to be a no, unless Emma, Katherine and Rachel
are all super-keen... hint hint. If so, we can try to find a musician, but
I think it unlikely we'll be going this time.
*Dance on the Moor - *25-27th May 2019, Goathland. Goathland Plough Stots
are hosting a Festival of Dance (possibly a crawl via Steam Train?!), looks
to mostly be sword teams invited, so should be good (Goathland Plough
Stots, Mons Meg (I think), Southport Sword, High Spen, Sheffield Steel,
Saddleworth Morris) . Accommodation - offer of indoor camping at the
Community hub, along with space for tents. Alternatively B&B's or hotels,
if you prefer in the village:
"We will be working alongside the North Yorkshire Moore’s Steam Railway
which runs in-between Pickering and Whitby, with a station in Goathland
itself. This will hopefully allow us to offer the opportunity for a wider
range of dancing locations, including tight cramped areas on platforms and
some local watering holes and large public areas in our local seaside town
of Whitby!
We will have live music during the evenings ready to entertain you all
after a long day of dancing, and there will also be a bar with a large
variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. "
It's on the sign-up sheet, you know what to do!
*Wimborne Minster Folk Festival* - 7-9th June. Can dance Sat (10-5) or Sun
(1030-5), or both - given distance I would suggest going for the whole
weekend (takes about 3 hours to get there). We had an invite for this last
year, but it clashed with Beverley/St Albans weekend. I think both Judith
and her partner spoke to Becky about going when we we were at Sidmouth, so
can count it as an invite off the back of Sidmouth!
Have a good week and see some of you on Thursday!
Hannah :)
Hi All
*Travel*
I suggest we take the 0843 from London Bridge which arrives at 0949 in
Faversham. Please meet outside the Pret (No. 56 in the attached map) inside
London Bridge station at 0830 ready to go.
To come back, I'd suggest the 1552, getting back to London at 1700 or if
miss it, 1614-1734 (there is a train in between, need the slightly more
expensive ticket, £20.55 rather than £18.80 both with railcard). Martin and
I will need to be trying to get the first one. If you would like me to buy
your ticket for you and you'll be taking the 0843 from London Bridge,
please let me know by Wednesday 1200 - I'll book the £18.80 one unless you
ask otherwise.
If anyone is driving, there is free parking available at their festival
village (I think there is a rough map/description in the attached
programme), if you would like to use it please send me your reg plate.
*Then the order of the day will be:*
Procession, meet at 10, process at 1030 - I will bring the banner.
Then we have 3 spots each with 2 other dance teams - 1200-1300 on Stone St,
1330-1430 Post Office, 1445-1530 Stone St.
I'm hoping we can see if there is a nearby pub to pop into during our spots
as it's probably going to be hard going dancing outside and I'm not sure
that we'll have enough to fill that amount of time!
Apparently there will be portaloos at the spots, though personally I'm
hoping we can nip into a pub...see above :) (I'm not an alcoholic really, I
promise, though probably will be bringing a hip flask!) The festival have
said that they don't think it is possible to dance in the pubs because they
will be busy and hope that we enjoy the festival and will come back to
dance outside in turn-and-turn about. I think they did get that we much
prefer, and are better on, wooden pub floors but as they don't think this
is possible, they have timetabled us outside. So, let's go and make the
most of it, even if it isn't our ideal dance conditions
The centre is pretty compact, so we will easily be able to grab lunch in
the half hour gap we have around lunch time.
Thanks,
Hannah
Hi All,
A few points of business this week, particular attention needed on the
Belgium item please as I would like to be able to get back to them asap.
Latest info for Faversham and Bromyard will be in separate emails. Don't
forget that Monday 27th is a Bank Holiday so there won't be a practice...
next one will be 3rd Sept
1. Sidmouth
2. Crawl
3. Belgium - urgent response required
1. Sidmouth - thanks once again for everyone's efforts, there have been
many nice things being said/written/emailed, so well done everyone for
that. We've had some general thanks from Charlotte and Malcolm, the dance
team organisers, including congrats for raising the most money for the
festival - so awesome job on that as well! ☺
Morris party organisers also sent thanks and said that we pitched it
perfectly (as did Chilts and Camden, it wasn't just to us :) )
We've been sent a link to a feedback form for the festival which anyone can
fill it out, so if you feel like providing some feedback to the festival,
please do - you can also be entered to win a pair of free tickets to next
year's festival should you wish. Link to feedback form below:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf_UDuJbPlpAjuYy2JV84V13-
IbmU33p3ga9xWlEQ4JL2ZIGw/viewform
If you had a partner ticket, could you please provide me with £10 (or £5 if
just the weekend) - I'll accept both cash and bank transfers (details at
end of email). I think there are some general finance discussions happening
as well, so hopefully we can give everyone some money towards their train
tickets - watch this space...
2. Crawl next Thursday (30th August) - more info coming soon... (like next
week)
3. Belgium - the invite that has been half way here for several months! We
finally managed some successful communication... so they have invited us
for the weekend of 16-18 November (2018). I think the weekend would look
something like arriving either Fri evening or possibly Sat AM (would likely
be a v early train though to make it worthwhile!). The main reason for
going is to dance at their folk dance evening on Saturday night. The rest
is all fairly flexible at the mo, but could be shown around Grimbergen on
Saturday, dance in evening, then on Sunday go to Brussels or elsewhere and
potentially dance. I think this can be guided by us to a certain degree.
Probably come home Sunday evening (though am sure if anyone wants to stay
til Monday that would be fine). Accommodation would be with host families.
In terms of getting there, there are eurostar tickets available - the £29
ones on the way out are only available in the middle of the day on Friday
or on the 0618 saturday morning, otherwise it will be more like £39 or £49
out. Coming back trains would most likely cost £49. Flying looks to be
around £97 return. We can work this out exactly if we have a team to go,
though feel free to do a quick investigation if it helps you decide one way
or another.
On which note, please fill in the sign-up sheet for this asap, so we can
let them know one way or another. I think they are quite keen for us to go,
but if we can't then I think they would be wanting to invite another team.
If possible please try to be a yes or no rather than hovering in the maybe
category.
It's all on the sign-up sheet - so go, go, go! (also please take a quick
look at the September crawl while you're there...☺)

Many thanks Sue.
BTW I heard huge praise indeed from a past president of the Fed as to what a
magnificent display Tower Ravens put on in Sidmouth! From what I saw I could
only agree

Hello DOT girlfriends,
Hope all is well. I know you have all often enquired after my dear
Mum knowing how poorly she had been in recent months, thank you for
caring. I just wanted to share that sadly she passed away on Sunday
afternoon. I was so glad my sister and I could be with her. Right now
I feel so so sad I shall miss her so much.
See you all soon if the London practice works out, hope so.
Fondest wishes
Liz xx

Hello all,
Please note there is no practice tomorrow in order to give those who went to Sidmouth a rest (plus I know a host of people are away!)
The next practice will be Monday 20th, where the focus will be prepping for Bromyard. After a quick look we can do all 3 rappers, and clog but will want to practice numbers we're at. We will also need to think about Faversham for the 2nd September, for that we can do Jubilee and Picaddilly, but not as sure about Westerhope!
Practice after that, 27th, is off as it is a bank holiday, so we will have the final practice as the 3rd.
For all people who didn't make Sidmouth, you missed a lot of fun, but can relish the fact that we made a great impression and can only hope to have raised our profile and get more invites off the back of it!
For all of you who were there, thank you for all of your hard work and enthusiasm. I slept for 13 hours (plus some additional naps) and am still pretty sleepy!
Photos: I've uploaded decent ones that Ken took to facebook, please feel free to add if you are an admin, or add them to here and give us a nudge to add for you:

For anyone with broken shoes please look into fixing them before next practice, or at least before your next outing!
Have a great week 😊

Hi all
As promised, here's a map showing the bus stops closest to the campsite,
and the walk up Ice House Lane to get there.
If you're coming from Exeter, get off at the Ice House Lane stop.
*As you're approaching Sidmouth, the bus will turn right off the main road
near Waitrose and drop down into the bottom of the valley. It'll turn left
at the bottom of the hill, immediately pass a bus stop and then the next
stop is Ice House Lane.*
If you're coming from Honiton, you can choose to either get off at Long
Park as you come into Sidmouth or ride into the centre and back out again
towards Exeter, getting off at Ice House Lane. It'll be slightly quicker to
get off at Long Park, but a much shorter walk from Ice House Lane (10 mins
vs 20 mins).
*For the Long Park stop, the bus will approach Sidmouth from Sidford, past
a pub on the right hand side, near some traffic lights, called the Rising
Sun. The road runs down through housing estates into Sidmouth. The stop
before Long Park has a layby with an attractive wooden bus shelter. There's
a high, red brick, garden wall on the left shortly afterwards. Just before
the stop there's a road sign warning of elderly people on the left, and the
park opens up on the right.*
*For the Ice House Lane stop coming out of Sidmouth, it's the second stop
after the Balfour Arms pub on the right.*
*'Sidmouth bus' train ticket*
If you're coming from Honiton, it's possible to buy an add-on to your train
ticket for the bus to Sidmouth. I think it costs about £2.50 return - a
fair bit cheaper than the bus fare.
You need to go to a ticket office, present your tickets and ask to buy the
Sidmouth Bus add-on. Don't let them sell you "PlusBus", which is more
expensive and less useful. If they need it, the station code for Sidmouth
is SDT, and you can show them this page if you need to convince them that
the ticket exists:
https://www.southwesternrailway.com/travelling-with-us/at-the-station/bus-l…
See you on Sunday!
Martin
