Hey all,
for those of us who have skirts and sashes please bring these in so we can get new people sorted with kit and solve any problems we have with existing kit fitting!
Thanks,
Becky
Hello all,
Thank you for those who came on Monday, I know we were a bit thin on the ground but we went through some of the new Piccadilly (without Ffion falling over yay!) and made a solid start on a Westerhope relaunch.
1. For anyone who wasn't at practice please save 15th January as an all day practice day in your diary- from what I can tell basically everyone is free (apart from Sue who might just be in later?) so it'd be a really good day to break the back of any problems and just get the dances so we dance them out. if you can't make the 15th but haven't let me know please do so ASAP!! I'm still mulling over the DERT sets but will announce once I've got my head round the people/position maths- even if you think you won't be in a set please leave this date free if you have said you're interested in competing!!
2. Please fill in the doodle poll regarding availability for crawls in the run up to DERT, this applies to everyone, even if you're not competing, even if you don't think you're ready to dance but might like to come along [😊] I know Friday's are harder for people to commit to but I think it's important we do at least one to get used to busier spaces, as they almost always are on Fridays. For everyone who filled the dates in at practice I've already put you in, all maybes have been left as no's. If I get desperate I'll be asking all the no's if there is any chance they want to be a yes!
http://doodle.com/poll/b9u8e9rnkc49g9ne
Please consider the signup sheet for all the new events Hannah mentioned last week, in particular look at the 10th December!
https://docs.google.com/document/d/11XHQc6j0g7HQto7rhOs6k0bfkw-XmFb8jmCeRa4…
3. Shoes! My shoes are falling apart, I know there are various people who are interested in a new pair/ new people who might want to invest in them, can you give some thoughts and decide so I can get some ordered next week, I figure we might save some money doing it on mass, even if it's just saving on postage.
The shoes are around £20 plus another £20 for the resin, but they do then last several years. Hannah can you send the link for the shoes we're going for? I've followed the one on the gdrive but there are 2 at £22.99 and I'm not sure which one we go for, or if we found another source when they were out of stock??
See you on Monday.

Which Thursdays/Fridays are you available?
Hey all,
So Roseanna isn't at practice - one of the people we were getting kit sorted for, neither is Hannah who I know is having problems. Therefore postpone it all by a week! I.e. don't bother bringing stuff for now [😊]
Becky
Hello all,
Hope everyone is having a bit more of a restful week, I'm a little in shock at not seeing some of you for a while!
Please can anyone who took a necker return it to Kate if you haven't already.
KIT - Sue can you come with kit in mind for (in particular) Roseanna and Rachel-Anne. Although in general it'd be good to get anyone else who needs anything sorted. Not neccessarily for you to do but for you to be in charge of!
Jo S. can you bring Nic's old sash?
Kate can you bring Nic's old skirt?
If anyone has anything that needs repairing or altering it might be a good opportunity to flag this up (Hannah I know you're not there but perhaps if you come with anything next week so we can try and fit you again?)
We do only have limited amounts of material left so we are at the point of sharing and recycling, which is fine we just need to buddy up a little on sizes [😊]
At the moment I have Katherine, Hannah and Jo W. who are not here this coming week, is there anyone else who has told me and I've forgotten? Or who might have forgotten to tell me? We've had brilliant numbers recently which is great for making progress on Piccadilly and Jubilee all at once!
I am trying to narrow down weekend practices pre-DERT. I'll be in touch once I've made final desicions on teams and dates.
Ta,
Becky
Hi All,
Thank you an well done to everyone who came to Thrales Weekend - it was
great and we've had loads of positive comments from various teams/people
which is great. For anyone who has missed the social media storm - *we WON
the Beadnell!!!* We are now a prize-winning team as of Sunday, and the
proud owners of a singing fish trophy. I'm looking forward to the pictures
of it swimming around the Thrales trophies Becky... There are/will be
various videos floating around somewhere on facebook if anyone feels
they've missed out...
So, business for those that missed it (and a few additional items that have
come in since) - apologies for the long email again - we just seem to have
lots coming up!
1. November Crawl
2. Mabel Day
3. Chippenham
4. Sign-ups
5. Bedford Christmas Party
6. V Arts
7. York
1. The November crawl will be in either Stratford or Whitechapel probably -
Katherine is organising this and Carol has kindly agreed to play for us, so
all good..
2. Mabel Day - I think we now have enough of us to confirm. They have
promised Cake...
3. Chippenham - as agreed at the AGM, I have contacted Chippenham Folk
Festival to say that we would be interested in dancing there. We would
dance for 1 or 2 days, and if we dance on 2 days, then we get a half price
festival ticket (£58) and free camping (not the greatest offer, but it
would be dancing at a festival) - the same would apply to any partners etc
that we bring.
4. Sign-ups - please say whether or not you can make it to anything you
haven't already - this includes the Christmas Crawl; and the dance out with
Silver Flame and Earlsdon. Those of you that I added by hand on Monday - it
might be worth double checking that I've put your name in the right place
as I did manage to write one or two down on the wrong lines when I was
doing it (should all be correct though).
5. Bedford - we have an invitation from Fine Companions (
http://finecompanions.synthasite.com/) to dance at their Christmas Party on
16th December in Bedford. This has come through someone Kate knows and she
will need to get back to him soon - so could people put some kind of
expression of interest or not either on the sign-up sheet, or just reply.
Bedford is relatively easy to get to on the train taking between 30 and 60
minutes.
6. Laura S has been emailed about something called V Arts on 10th December
in The Courtyard Theatre that we could potentially dance at. I don't have
much info about it beyond this:
"We are contacting you regarding a traditional dance and literacy evening
we are hosting on the 10th December at The Courtyard Theatre.
We are looking for 6 traditional dance acts that represent countries within
London and share their traditions. Through this we aim to bring unity and
joy.
Your society would be incredibly valuable to our production and as I am
English I am keen to have a highly talented group to represent our cultural
dance!
Here is a link to our event https://www.facebook.com
/events/340335549654158/?ti=icl"
Please have a think abut whether this is somtehing that we'd be interested
in doing.
7. We decided to say no to the York weekend - mostly on account of it being
a long way to go to dance outside. I've since realised that this would
probably be the weekend that Bromyard is, which we also discussed going to
at the AGM (I will get around to looking into this soon, I promise).
Have a great week or so and see you all soon!
Hannah :)
Hello Ladies,
Just to confirm that you can borrow some long swords from the EFDSS. Education department have wooden ones, and we also have some metal ones in the archive... I'm not entirely sure why we have some in the archive. Seems to me that they would be better off being used than gathering dust. Anyway, let me know when you'd like me to bring some to practice.
Laura
Hi All,
Thank you to everyone that danced / played / tommied at Northgates day of
dance last Saturday - was a great day!
Amazing to see so many people at practice on Monday! For anyone that missed
it / has forgotten, here's a recap of business plus a few extra little
bits. Plenty on the sign-up sheet so please fill it in! (link at the bottom)
1. Thrales Day
2. Mabels Day
3. Crawls
4. Other stuff
1. Thrales Day. Becky has covered most of this, so just a quick reminder
for those dancing Beadnell please bring your ironed necker and a pair of
black socks. The team tours are in the attached spreadsheet if you want to
know where we are throughout the day and here's a link to where all the
pubs that various teams will be visiting:
https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1H7g1Jg3nEFpelZEYp1pSEG48dvc&ll=51.5…
2. We have officially been invited to Mabel Day on 4th December! For those
that haven't been it's a day of dancing in pubs around lovely Oxford with
some other teams, finishing up with Cake in the final pub! It's on the sign
up sheet so please decide whether you can make it or not - will be great if
we can get a team together.
3. Our November crawl will be on 24th (area TBC) and we will have the
Christmas crawl on 15th December. All the money from the Christmas crawl
will be going to a charity to be decided on beforehand. Please fill in
whether you can make them on the sign-up sheet.
4. We have an invite for 11th February from Silver Flame, to dance out with
them and Earlsdon in Stratford on Avon - it's on the sign-up sheet...
https://docs.google.com/document/d/11XHQc6j0g7HQto7rhOs6k0bfkw-XmFb8jmCeRa4…
Have a good week and see several of you over the weekend!
Hannah :)
Hey all,
Thanks for the excellent work put in on Monday, it was great to have so many people! After this weekend I'm hoping we can focus on determining the exact changes we want to make to Piccadilly and then spreading that through the team [😊]
Re. Thrales day:
Friday - we'll be in the Parcel Yard in Kings Cross from around 6.30. Even if you can only come for 1, even if you're not there for the rest of the weekend, even if you can't show up until later, please come along! You don't need kit, you don't have to dance, all you need to do is make friends with people! If you're not sure if we're still there please text one of us (Katherine, Ffion and I will most likely be there - my number is 07988696321). NB If you can't make it that's fine too.
Saturday -Meet 10am at the Feathers (SW1H 0BH), nr. St James' Park tube. Apparently the landlady, who is rather concerned at having 80 or so rapper dancers descend, is planning on having the bacon butties ready for around 10, therefore, if nothing else you snooze you lose and get a sad sandwich. If nothing else please be there at the very very lastest of 10.30, to save me having a heart attack. FYI Saturday night buffet is provided and should include a nice mix of meat, veggie and vegan options.
Sunday - Meet at 12-4pm, at the Knights Templar (WC2A 1DT) nr. Chancery Lane tube. Again, please arrive close to 12, this time there will be no reward of bacon, but I will love you forever (and isn't that worth so much more?). Food is not provided but a reduced menu will be available.
Dancers:
Saturday - Piccadilly 1. Ffion, 2. Becky, 3. Hannah, 4. Jo, 5. Katherine
Jubilee 1. Katherine, 2. Jo, 3. Hannah, 4. Becky, 5. Ffion (Having not done 4 in a while this might be interesting from my point of view)
Sunday - Piccadilly - Same numbers but Laura W. can be 2, and I could be 3
Jubilee - To be decided on the day
Beadnell - 1. Ffion, 2. Jo, 3. Becky, 4. Hannah, 5. Katherine
Sue will be our awesome Tommy throughout excluding Beadnell where Simon will be taking over temporarily. Kate is going to be rocking it on violin all weekend, please help cart her case around if you see her flagging.
I hope that basically confirms things for people. Sunday doesn't actually involve that much dancing and I'll be trying to let people rest who have been particularly shattered by Saturday, injuries, drunkenness and the like.
There is a schedule for the Saturday although now i can't find it...hopefully Hannah will do a better job than me and send it round with the usual business.
See you soon,
Becky xx
Hello,
Does anyone have a spare large-ish sash I could borrow? I'm not going home before Bath tomorrow but I've packed Patrick's man sash by mistake! Hannah, do you still have the one that was too big for you? Maybe that would fit me. Or Kate, do we have any spares at your house?
Sorry for being rubbish at packing!
Ffion x
Please take a look at my blog on Welsh folk songs - caneuongwerin.wordpress.com
Hi All,
Firstly, Congratulations Laura!!! Such a lovely wedding - in fact one could
say Glorious!, and thank you to everyone who danced/played/tommied on
Saturday. Laura very generously provided us with some Gin, some of which we
drank at practice on Monday - but there is still some left!
In other news:
1. Northgate Day of Dance
2. Thrales Day
3. DERT
4. Westerhope
1. *Northgate* - We will be getting the 0902 train to BATH from Paddington,
which will arrive at 1039 (This does mean we'll be early, but the other
option is being late...). Those of you getting the train. *Please gather
near the top of the escalators at Paddington from the underground opposite
platform 4/5 at 0845*.
For those driving down the meeting pub is The Bell Inn ~16 minute walk from
the station - please be there by *11.30 ready to dance at 12*. Once all
teams have gathered (and done a dance?) we'll be going off on crawls in
pairs (we're with Mabels) - with our last dance in the Raven! Once done
everyone returns to the Westgate for the evening (unfortunately we wont
have a team for the last dance (sorry!) but should be fun anyway) - where
you can buy food if you want to.
2. Thrales Day - or Thrales Weekend I should say. Not much further to add
for now other than we will need to be at the Feathers, Westminster at 10am
on he Saturday. Will provide more info next week. On Monday we will do the
Beadnell that we came up with the other day so everyone can see what the
current plan is...
3. DERT - I've booked us into the Kendal Youth Hostel - link here (
http://www.kendalhostel.com/) if anyone wants a gander. If you haven't
filled in the doodle poll for DERT practices please do so that Becky can
decide when they are.
4. Westerhope - As Laura S can't make every practice (and as agreed at the
AGM) we need someone to help with teaching Westerhope - are there any
volunteers? If you would like more info, I'm sure Laura will be happy to
ask any questions.
Think that's all for now. Have a good week and see some of you on Saturday!
Hannah :)
Hello all!
See you at the Woolpack around 4.30, please text on 07988696321 if you experience any problems and will be dramatically late!
Ideally I want to run through both dances before we head out so be good to have everyone around so as to do that then eat in relaxed way [😊] In particular I think we need to do Piccadilly to ensure we're all happy with the original version!
Please have shiny shoes and clean kit.
Plan for sets currently is (unless I've massively messed up the no.1 situation!):
Jubilee:
1. Rachel
2. Hannah
3. Becky
4. Hannorah
5. Katherine
Piccadilly:
1. Jo
2. Becky
3. Hannah
4. Hannorah
5. Katherine
Also I don't know if anyone want to bring clothes to change into at the wedding, maybe worth bearing in mind?
Ta,
Becky
Hi All,
1. Laura's Wedding!!
2. Northgate Day of Dance
3. Thrales Day
4. DERT
5. Longsword
6. Sign-up sheet
1. Laura's Wedding!! - Plan is to meet at the Woolpack Inn at 1630. For
those catching trains, the 1512 to Chilham arrives at 1617 and then it's a
short walk to the pub. Of those that have bought tickets home - I think
they have both got the 1214 - but one on the fast train and one on the slow
one...
2. Northgate - We'll take the 0902 to BATH - you can get a super-off peak
return which costs £37.30 with a railcard. For anyone driving the meeting
pub is The Bell Inn ~16 minute walk from the station (meeting 11.30 for
dancing at 12). The last pub we will get to for 5 and then all the teams
will dance there. The pub has food.
3. Thrales Day - or Thrales Weekend I should say. If you have any dietary
requirements please let me know.
4. DERT - I need to know for definite who is intending to come so that we
can get accomodation booked (already some places are selling out) If you
haven't put your name on the DERT spreadsheet to say whether you are coming
or not, please do so (or you can email me if you prefer). Also if you would
like to bring a spectator then could you mention that as well please?

Glad to hear you are on the mend Roseanna - would you like to come to DERT
with us? (It'll be awesome!)
5. Longsword - Probably going to be 11th December, just trying to get a
room booked and will then confirm it.
6. I've added Mabel's Day to the sign-up sheet just in case. We have also
been invited by Silver Flame to a dance out with them and Earlsdon in
Stratford on Avon (not the Stratford at the end of the jubilee line like I
previously thought...)

Have a good week!

Hi All,
1. Laura's Wedding!!
2. Northgate Day of Dance
3. Thrales Day
4. DERT
5. Longsword
1. Laura's Wedding - if you haven't booked a train ticket and need to book
one (not to self), we are getting the 1512 to arrive in Chilham at 1617. If
you are driving down, then we shall meet you in the Woolpack at 1630. This
should give us plenty of time to sort ourselves out, ready to do our
mini-crawl finishing with a dance (or two?) at the wedding itself!
2. Northgate - Trains will be the 0902 to BATH, which will arrive at 1039
(This does mean we'll be early, but the other option is being late...) The
meeting pub is The Bell Inn ~16 minute walk from the station (meeting 11.30
for dancing at 12) for anyone driving to meet us there. The last pub we
will get to for 5 and then all the teams will dance there. The pub has food.
3. Thrales Day - or Thrales Weekend I should say. Becky has mostly covered
this already - I've added some extra info to the sign-up sheet and will
provide further details closer to the time. There is a buffet on the
Saturday, so could you let me know if you have any dietary requirements?
The doodle poll for practices can be found here: http://doodle.com/poll/
pg2h9s2fx6vezd8p
5. Longsword - I've added these onto the practice sheet. I think
realistically we are looking at an afternoon slot on 20th November or 11th
December. If you are interested in doing Longsword and haven't yet put your
name down anywhere then here is the place to do it. I've put down
everyone's availability who replied to one of the polls (apologies if there
are any mistakes). I'll look into venues and then we can finalise the
day/time.

Think that's all for now. Have a good week!

Hello all,
First off thanks so much for everyone's hard work and patience with working on new figures in piccadilly. I know it's rather longwinded and means some people aren't getting to dance much. My plan is that as soon as we get the changes walked through and decided upon we can then get everyone learning them. There's no point trying to learn piccadilly if we're about to fix it! Anyway all help in walk-through, teaching, supporting through watching and commenting is really appreciated!
Hope everyone enjoyed double jubilee as much as I did. Hopefully we'll keep having enough numbers to do this and then we can be comfortable with it for dert showcase.
Beadnell for thales day, as mentioned some of us drunkenly came up with modern interpretive Beadnell. Or something like that! No swords no stepping...it'll be very silly but hopefully work. People I have interested are I think the following: me, Katherine, jo, hannah, laura w., ffion. Is there anyone else? Obviously we only need five people but as we're going to need to work it outside of practice extras will be helpful. If anyone else is interested let me know!
Thanks to everyone who has filled in the doodle poll re. Pre dert practices. If you haven't done so already please do asap so we can start making plans!
Thanks,
Becky

Hello all,
Kate won't be around this Monday so if anyone willing can bring an instrument that'd be much appreciated (Ffion this might have to be you as Hannah is away- anyone esle??).
The plan is (hopefully) to work on some new stuff again so shouldn't mean the person is stuck playing all the time.
My brain is melted, not sure if it's jetlag or over exposure to American life! I will try my best on monday but please bear with me, I've had zero thinking time and will only have Sunday to do so as I'm away again.
See you on Monday.
Becky xx
Hello all,
First of all I know you probably think I'm mad for wanting to get this sorted so early but it's a total nightmare getting people together for DERT and I'd like to know as soon as possible who is available and when. If you feel like you want to compete in any way you need to fill this in!
http://doodle.com/poll/pg2h9s2fx6vezd8p
I know it looks like a lot of dates but if you can fill them in as best as possible that'd be great. I haven't included the 1st and 2nd of April because certainly I will be at Katherine's wedding as well as anyone else who is invited/dancing *cough fill in the signup sheet cough*
https://docs.google.com/document/d/11XHQc6j0g7HQto7rhOs6k0bfkw-XmFb8jmCeRa4…
As a warning Hannah will begin hounding people for definites on applications and accommodation for DERT soon. I am going off the sheet from the AGM where everyone said they wanted to go- small details being:
Rachel-Anne only wanted to be a spectator
Kate wanted to bring Paul
Roseanna I don't know if you'd like to attend, and obviously Jo only started last week so I also don't know.
If you think you might change your mind, or want to bring someone, or anything like that, please let Hannah know.
Thanks,
Becky

To be confirmed with the church once we have some clear dates, please sign up if you want to be competing in DERT in any capacity i.e. Main, Spotlight, Westerhope. once I have all the info I can narrow down what days would be best for what.
Have no fears, laura s has ensured we can still go :-D
Big thank you! Please feel free to organise tickets, contact Sue to get money back.
Ken is emailing thales re. A discount group ticket as we have ffion (possibly laura) who would benefit from this. Which isn't enough people.
Please note all train fairs are being refunded, however these have to be advanced fairs, I.e. You won't be given the money for a late bought expensive ticket. And soz we won't pay for you to go first class :-p
See you Monday. My aim is to get those going to laura ws wedding organised so we feel confident dancing. Also to push through the changes we have been figuring out. New people to get increasingly confident at jubilee with help from the rest of us.
Thanks,
Becky

Hi All,
1. Northgate DoD
2. Crawl
3. Laura's Wedding!
4. Longsword
5. Shoes
1. There is a chance that we may now not have a team to do this, so
please *don't
buy your ticket yet*, just in case.
2. We've cancelled this given the proximity to weddings and Northgate (plus
there were only 3 people who said they were free).
3. We'll be getting the 15.12 to Chilham (should arrive at 16.17) - the
plan being to have a chilled out meal, then a mini-crawl and the actual
dance at the wedding. Not yet sure what time we'll need to leave if staying
over.
4. Longsword. The likely days are 20th November, 4th December, 11th
December. If you haven't yet signed up and would like to join in, I've left
the poll open. (Those who told me their availability on Monday / changes
have been added.
5. I realise I promised to send a link to where I bought my shoes a couple
of weeks ago... sorry for forgetting until now!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Mens-Black-Leather-Oxford-Cadet-Parade-Capped…
Might be worth trying some on before buying so you know which size to get.
I think Ffion and me both have the newer ones. They'll also need to have an
extra sole put on the bottom.
Have a good week!
Hannah
