Hi all,
I've just got back from Poland so have seen there are lots of Leigh emails but haven't read them yet. Found this in The Foxglove Trio account despite the fact I've given Claire TR and Rachel's address several times.
Have fun!

Dear Dancers
Firstly I must apologise for having been out of the picture for the past

illness. It has been a difficult time and has meant I have not been able

dancers to extend their slot. Please use the time slots as guidance and
feel free to adjust accordingly on the day.
Gareth Prior will be running the Victoria Car Park site so please head to
the site and make yourself known to Gareth who will be manning the PA
system.
*THE PROCESSSION*
The procession will be the main focal point of the day and it has been
arranged that all sound stages will be closed down for the commencement and
duration of the procession.
We would urge every dancer present on the day to join in with the
procession, even if the cobbles mean you would rather walk it! At 13:00 we
would like all dancers to line up in the specified order below, the reason
being that it makes the process of calling all the dancers into Victoria
Car Park at the end of the procession, all the more straight forward. As

Right. I now have the original woman who was meant to be helping us number. And the managers so I'll phone them later in the morning and *fingers crossed* let you know what's going on!

I would prefer to meet at 11 or it's a ridiculously early start for some
people.
If the procession is at 1, we'd still have an hour dancing before that. We
have very few reserve dancers, and realistically we're not going to be able
to dance before during and after the procession. Let's take it easy and not
exhaust ourselves before it.

As each side dances into Victoria Car Park they will stop and form an arch, the next side will dancer under that arch then form their own arch on the end. The next sides dances under the two sides arches before tagging on the end and so on. Once all sides are in Victoria Car Park the traditional Dorset Four Hand Reel will take place.

Hi all
If we're going all that way I'd rather go a bit earlier to make more of a day of it. I'm sure we could find some of our own 'spots' to dance before and even after procession... I seem to remember a few allys and shop door ways in our time ;) Info point seems a good starting point to meet - 10.30am? This would give us a chance to dance, have lunch together then procession.
I don't think we should pull out now. Plus... We need to show off Beadnell ;)

Hi Becky and Leigh on Sea people
I am surprised the whole thing does not start a bit earlier? Is the parade the first item? Starting later, I wonder what time it finishes cos we will want to push off around 5pm.
I would like to meet so we can have lunch together and a practise to help get into the groove.
Twelve or may be slightly earlier.
I saw an information tent marked on Belton Bridge on the festival map as a meeting place but name time and place and I will be there.

Ok, so a bit more information!
The parade isn't until 1.15 but it's suggested we get there in plenty of time before that. I'm talking to the manager of the whole event rather than our contact who would have more precise information. He tells me she has had some personal problems in the last couple of weeks but he has e-mailed her to try and prompt her to give us more exact information.
I thought maybe aim to get there for 11 or half past? I'm not sure if that's us hanging around for a stupid length of time. If the people going could give opinions that'd be great. We could always meet at 12 and have lunch together?
Let me know,

Hi all,
Another good practice last night with lots of Beadnell progress made. Here's my proposed plan for the next two weeks.
30 June -
Teach Beadnell to those who've missed one/both of the last 2 weeks: 1) (Lindsey to stand in) 2) Laura 3) Kat 4) Hannorah 5) Josie & Rhona
Polish Beadnell with non-Leigh set: 1) Jo 2) Katherine 3) (Becky to stand in) 4) Sinead 5) Ffion
Jubilee from alternative positions: polishing Hannorah 2 and Becky 4, teaching Jo and Katherine 1. We might have a new member, also called Katherine, so this would be a good chance to teach her some figures.
7 July -
Mini-crawl in Camden. Hannorah is finding some pubs. At the moment we only have 2 yeses so please sign up https://docs.google.com/document/m?id=11XHQc6j0g7HQto7rhOs6k0bfkw-XmFb8jmCe…
Followed by Laura Smyth & Ted Kemp and The Foxglove Trio at Green Note. Music starts at 8.30pm. Nic is going to sort out attendance and tickets.
Hope that all sounds ok. At the moment I'm expecting everyone apart from Aisha and Rachel next week. If you can't make it please let me know as soon as you know so that I don't send Becky on a pointless trip to get the second set of swords again!
Ffion x
Hey everyone,
Just to reassure everyone they aren't being kept in the dark about this weekend - we still haven't got any information. Rachel was expecting some information this week and has sent a reminder with me CCd in so hopefully something will come back ASAP. I appreciate it's getting late, I've investigated the website for the event but it's not great for times or anything-feel free to poke around if you think you can find anything!
http://leighfolkfestival.com/
I've also messaged the festival facebook page with a plea for information just now, so fingers crossed for a reply.
If we haven't heard anything by this time tomorrow I recommend we aim to get there at 10? If nothing else we can find a coffee shop, let me know if anyone has any thoughts on this.
Becky x
Hi all,
As you'll have seen yesterday, Rachel is stepping down as secretary. We decided last night that we will elect a new secretary at next week's practice to give people time to think about whether they'd like to stand. We also think we probably need a quorum to make the election ligit so please can everyone try their hardest to be there? If you can't make it and would like to stand for the position send me a couple of sentences about why you'd like to be secretary and I'll read it out during the election process.
Ffion x
Hey,
Just to confirm there will definitely be NO crawl this Thursday (26th) as we didn't get enough yes's from pubs due to the darn FOOTBALL.
I am quite happy to try again in Whitechapel in the future, once the football has stopped...and the tennis..and the cricket BAH.
Becky x
Hi
I live very close to euston (and I'm going on Sunday), I could pick it up from the station or anywhere near by.

Hi,
Due to various personal and health related reasons, I would like to stand
down as secretary.
I don't have the energy or time at the moment to dedicate to the position
in the way that it needs, and I am conscious of letting the side down.
I'd be happy to be replaced either on a permanent basis or more temporarily
(if nobody wants to take it on permanently), but I'm not able to continue
the current situation. Volunteers welcome.
Sorry, and thank you.
I hope to eventually make it to practice at some point.

Hi all, Just a reminder of the plan for tonight: Polish Beadnell: 1) Lindsey, 2) Janet, 3) Becky, 4) Nic, 5) Sue. Procession: 1) Lindsey, 2) Janet, 3) Becky, 4) Nic, 5) Katherine. Once through Jubilee with Leigh set: 1) Lindsey 2) Janet 3) Becky 4) Nic/Sinead 5) Katherine/SueIf there's time we should also teach Katherine Beadnell so there's a back up number for Leigh.
I've only had apologies from Hannorah so I'm hoping we'll be able to get 2 sets going tonight with the non-Leigh people also working on Beadnell.
I've had a look at the sign ups for this summer and I suggest we learn Beadnell from these positions:1) Lindsey, Jo, Ffion2) Janet, Laura, Katherine3) Becky, Kat, Rachel4) Nic, Hannorah, Sinead5) Sue, Josie, Rhona, Ffion/Katherine (extra)
I've added these to the postitions spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wP--H3QhDYfZPRlKkZpYvWnYQNWR4PeXFY_hhpS…). Please let me know asap if anyone wants to swap position. See you later, Ffion x P.S. Gentle reminder about the location of the sign up sheet. The more people who fill it before business o clock , the more dancing we can do :-) https://docs.google.com/document/d/11XHQc6j0g7HQto7rhOs6k0bfkw-XmFb8jmCeRa4…
Hi all,
Sorry for delay on this, I didn't go round the pubs on Thursday-partly due to being busy but mainly because I couldn't stand being around during the England match!
I'm afraid it looks like a no for the crawl- a variety of nos, lots of football screens and a couple of places that are shut so I couldn't ask.
I'll give more details tomorrow night so we can decide for sure but if anyone else has any bright ideas do say!
Becky x
As promised, here's the dance written out
Walk on as normal but with swords pointing down.
Arrive at starting position but face inwards towards other dancers.
Swoosh swords up one by one, starting with number 1, so that they're all touching 3/4s of the way up the sword.
8 bars of music (this is double what we're used to).
Walk round clockwise clashing on the even beats - 8 clashes in total so on beats 2, 4, 6, 8, 2, 4, 6, 8.
Keep walking round putting swords down on OUTSIDE shoulder. The swords should stay flat so don't hold too tightly. Your right hand should rest at or near the inside of your left elbow. Your left arm will be fully extended (or nearly fully extended, depending on the length of your arms!). This lasts for 8 bars.
'Turn out' = single guard in the order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 taking 8 whole beats to go round the circle and back to place. Remember to put your sword back on your outside shoulder.
Keep walking until 1 calls lock - hopefully 8 beats but will depend on when 1 reaches the front.
In 4 beats get to the lock position and IMMEDIATELY start walking round clockwise - lock as soon as you can and lift the lock up to number 1s nose height as soon as possible after it's locked. Walk round for 8 beats in total (so beats 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3, 4).
By beat 4 you should be in roughly the right place then you have another 4 beats to lower the lock, raise the swords over your heads and turn over your right shoulder to be in an outward facing ring by beat 8.
Step for 2 x straight 8s.
Number 3 walks backwards, 2&4 get dragged back meeting belly to belly in the middle, 1 and 5 do a windmills type thing round the edges, then sweep out into a large open ring. This should take 8 beats so that there's a swoosh back on beat 8.
'Curley' = normal curley but 3 stays on the left side of the set. When 1 is coming through the curley for the 3rd time they call lock.
Lock through to open ring.
'Number 3' = curley where number three goes left, then right, then left.
Lock through to open ring.
'1 and 5' = number 1 crosses over to the right hand side curley circle. Number 5 crosses to the left hand side curley circle behind number 1. They cross back (1 in front of 5) just before going into the lock.
Lock through to open ring.
'2 and 4' = number 2 crosses over to the right hand side curley circle. Number 4 crosses to the left hand side curley circle behind number 2. They cross back (2 in front of 4) just before going into lock.
Walk round with lock at nose height until 1 is at the back of the set.
1 picks up the lock. Everyone peels to either side of 1 and takes 4 small steps forward to be in a line facing the audience. Order from left to right as you look at it = 4, 5, 1, 2, 3.
Step for 2 x straight 8s. Stamp out.
Walk off after number 4.
Congratulations everyone! I was quietly confident that we could get the Leigh set dancing Beadnell by the end of the evening but not even I thought we'd get TWO separate sets through with only minor errors. Very impressive!
Jo took a video of the Leigh set and hopefully she'll get it uploaded this week so we can all revel in how great we are (plus find the points which need fine tuning)!
During business we discussed the next crawl and the fact that football might make it a difficult evening. Becky's going to take a look at the pubs in Whitechapel to see how sporty they seem. The proposed plan of action for 7 July is to meet as early as possible, do a few pubs in Camden and then come to mine and Laura's gig at Green Note which starts at 8.30pm. I put this on the sheet (with incorrect formatting - I need to download the google docs app onto my ipad too!) so please sign up.
So, the plan for next Monday is:
Polish Beadnell: 1) Lindsey, 2) Janet, 3) Becky, 4) Nic, 5) Sue.
procession: 1) Lindsey, 2) Janet, 3) Becky, 4) Nic, 5) Katherine.
Once through Jubilee with crawl sets (if we're crawling) 1)Rachel 2) Laura/Jo 3) Becky/Lindsey? 4) Nic 5) Katherine/Sue
Once through Jubilee with Leigh set: 1) Lindsey 2) Janet 3) Becky 4) Nic/Sinead 5) Katherine/Sue
If there's time we should also teach Katherine Beadnell so there's a back up number for Leigh but, as we didn't get to teaching Nic and Janet the procession bits yesterday, this might be a step too far.
I'll try and type up the Beadnell figures so you can learn it in theory. In the meantime, please can everyone spend this week practicing stepping slowly in 8s? You know the drill - step at the photocopier, when waiting for the kettle to boil, when waiting for a train etc. Who cares how silly you look?!
Ffion x
Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who sent me their thoughts about our summer priorities. It's just a shame you don't all agree with each other!! As you know, I make a plan for every week's practice but I've now attempted to create a plan for the next month, taking into account the various responses. If your name is in the plan please check your diaries asap and let me know if you're going to be on holiday that week. If your name's not on plan, obviously please still turn up!! Beadnell is by far the easiest trad dance, and I think it's easier than our circle dance, so we'll give that a go tomorrow.
See you all tomorrow,

I think we should try and keep practices regular and not skip weeks. I'm sure I could take stepping practice and run through the dance a couple of times. But I do like the idea of a mini crawl taking in the gig as well.
