Hello Rapper teams, Step dancers, and Mummers.
Thrales invite you to join us in our annual Rapper session on the afternoon
of Sunday 10th November in The Prince William Henry, 218 Blackfriars Rd,
London, SE1 8NL.
The Prince William Henry is about 100 yards North of Southwark Tube Station
(Jubilee line) but it is also within walking distance of Waterloo East,
Waterloo, and Blackfriars Stations.
Mons Meg will be dancing with us this year.
The pub has a new manager, but he's heard all about us from the old
manager, and the beer tastes as good as usual. (Youngs and Charles Wells)
The pub opens at noon.
Dancing from 12.30, until 4.00pm.
I hope you can join us
Please let me know if you can come.
Cheers

Josie - 38
Katherine - 16
Nikki - 15
You can pay me when you see me at practice or transfer to the Ravens

which helps enormously.
Thanks all,

Hi all,
I'm trying to find a good photo to send to Folk London. I don't think the ones I've taken on my ipad will be big enough - he asked for 1MB or more. Who has the one with us at the end of the first Farringdon crawl with Simon in the feather boa?

Hi all,
Enough people are not going to be able to be there tonight that practice is
officially cancelled. Sorry! I hope those of you who are in London will
make it home okay and look forward to seeing you all as normal next week.
Thanks,

Hi All
I won't be at practice tonight, as I'm not in London. My train line has been down for the best part of the day, so have been working from home.
See you next week.

Hi all,
Unfortunately I'm current stuck at home because there are no trains running on my line into London so I won't be able to join you tonight. Fortunately Rachel still has the keys and will be able to collect the spare set of swords from home before tonight so there will still be a practice. Sue's going to bring her fiddle for the music.
I believe the dancers going tonight are Rachel, Jo, Becky, Hannorah, Katherine, Sue, Josie and possibly but probably not Laura. If any of you aren't going to make it please can you email and say so in case it means there won't be enough dancers to make it possible to practise?
Hope you have a good evening and see you all next week, trains dependent!

Hi,
I'm afraid I won't be at practice tomorrow because we're visiting family for half term. I hope everything goes well and I'll see you next week.
Sinéad
Hi all,
A few weeks ago we discussed getting in touch with Folk London to see if they'd
like an article about us. I contacted them and they're very keen! They'd like a
half A5 page article, to put our December and January crawls in their diary and
to put a picture of us on their front cover!
Can you please:
A) Tell me what you think of the draft article below. Rachel and Nikki, do you
want to use your married or maiden names given you were unmarried at the time?
B) Fill in the availability for the December and January crawls which I've just added to the sheet - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvM6rY7GMmOGdF9vYVIwaXBmXzViSz…. Technically
our December one should be on Boxing Day so I’ve put 19 Dec in as a possible
alternative. Hannorah, could you suggest where these might be and maybe even
nominate a meeting pub which we could put in the Folk London diary?
C) Suggest a photo we have that meets these requirements - "Pictures need
to be high resolution colour jpegs (1meg or more) and in landscape format."
If we haven't got one perhaps we could take a nice one at the October crawl.
Tower Ravens - London's newest rapper
sword dance team
In April 2012 Thrales Rapper hosted DERT (the annual Dance England Rapper
Tournament) with the competition taking place in Soho pubs and evening events
at Cecil Sharp House. Although Thrales are a long established male team and
Hawksword formed a few years ago as a mixed gender longsword and rapper team,
there was no all-female rapper sword dancing team in London at the time. Three
young women (Rachel Sheridan, Lindsey Kennedy and Nicola Osborne) decided that
this needed to change and that DERT 2012 would be the best opportunity they'd
ever get to recruit some more women interested in dancing rapper in London.
18 months later and the group have a name - Tower Ravens - a musician, a number
of dancers, a set of swords (beautifully made by Jimmie Kilner) and two dances.
They crawl pubs in a different part of London on the fourth Thursday of each
month - see www.towerravens.org.uk for details - and always get a lot of
interest from the punters, and usually some loud cheers too! In March 2013 they
entered DERT coming a respectable 6th out of 13 in the open class.
In October they performed at their first festival in Tenterden and are hoping
for more opportunities to dance at festivals in 2014.
Tower Ravens practise every Monday evening at St Michael's church hall on
Cornhill, near Bank from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. They are always open to new
members - contact info(a)towerravens.org.uk or visit www.towerravens.org.uk for
more information. Catch the Tower Ravens in action at their next dance out
which will be in x area on x day in December.

Hello,
Sorry again, I can't make tonight and next week isn't likely either. I have a lot of deadlines at the moment because I'm taking several autumn semester modules so I've a lot on.
I will be at the agm, and I should be able to return to practice properly after that.

Sorry I haven't replied to your text Rachel - yet to unpack my charger from the weekend so phone's been dead all day!

Fabulous work, Hannorah!
Sorry to put a spanner in the works, however, but if we intend to display the card with the cake, any shade of blue will look naff with all the autumnal shades. I absolutely appreciate that it's in the Ravens' colours. But the theme of the wedding is brown/yellow/orange and particularly GREEN.
If we give the card separately, it is indeed superb, although I do prefer Hannorah's original version. The second one isn't even in Ravens' colours! Tried and failed to experiment with a green background, but now I must get baking. Fast.

It's displaying weirdly on my computer too. I have a feeling it's cos the font you've used isn't on my computer. If you 'save as' a PDF you'll have better luck.
I might have the background a slightly lighter blue as well, cos I think you may have trouble printing that dark with black writing.

Sue suggested sending a brown envelope round the team (so no one feel pressure to give a certain amount) which I think is a good suggestion. If we do it next week there's the added benefit that Nikki won't be there to see us doing it!

So far I've spent around £80 on ingredients, cake boards, cardboard boxes and ribbon, but I haven't finished yet. I'm keeping a record of everything. It's going to be around £100 and that doesn't include the 10in cake tin that I still need to buy (all the others I either have already or have borrowed). To my knowledge Nikki is not planning on paying Sue for the cake ingredients (I'm actually quite surprised you haven't had that conversation already, Sue?), so cake ingredients sound like a good present to me.
If you have any idea regarding what sort of amount it's going to be, Sue, we could work out how much that is each, and if there's extra money for something else as well or not.
I think there should definitely be a card or something to explain, though! Happy to buy something, but if Hannorah's going to make one that sounds even better :)

Hi AllSorry, I won't be at practice tonight either as I've got late netball game, & as its 1st of the season I don't want to miss it.
I am happy to contribute to the gift. Didn't we talk about all of us contributing towards the cake ingredients if Sue is having to pay for this herself, as it could work out quite expensive for her if not? If we went down this route perhaps we could make a little accompanying card/tag to indicate that that's what we've done. Happy to make one & send to you Sue?
Otherwise happy to gift towards a gift on their wedding list.
Would someone write a message in the main card from me? Something like ''Congratulations Nicky & Ozzie! May your married life together be full of love, happiness & harmony. Love Hannorah xxx'

Do make sure your column is up to date. Items particularly requiring
attention are listed below:
1. AGM
2. Cinquefoil Crawl
3. SOAS Persian Concert
- - - -
1. AGM
As I'm sure you all know our AGM dates are either 11/11 or 18/11. if you
have a preference for one date over the other, let us know, as else a
decision will be made TONIGHT.
2. CINQUEFOIL
We really need to get back to Cinquefoil about possible dates for a joint
crawl round London - they emailed us ages ago! The proposed set of dates
are 18/01/14, 25/01/14 or 01/02/14. Please sign up and let's get this in
the diary!
3. SOAS CONCERT
We've been asked to dance in the second half of a Persian concert one of
the SOAS guys is putting on. The concert is 7-10pm on 14/12/13, so I'm
guessing we would be on about 9pm. Potential to do other things round this
if there's enough interest.

We also need sign ups for Mabel Day, Northwood Day of Dance, to pick a date
for our boat trip and to start discussing festivals for nest year (an AGM
item?)
Thanks all, see you later!

Saturday 10th May 2014
We couldn't do this last May. If we are interested next year, it needs to be organised and booked quite soon, ie numbers by 15th November, deposits by 10th December.
It's a great day out in the Surrey/Kent Hills; coach transport between great pubs at places such as Penshurst and Limpsfield Chart, although the exact itinerary changes from year to year. All very pretty and green at a lovely time of year.
However it's mostly morris, so they don't cater for wooden floors. Dancing is outside, although we could always dance indoors if the floor is more suitable.
Northwood blokes are very friendly, welcoming and excellent hosts. There are usually about 6 guest sides.
It starts and finishes near a tram station, accessible from both Croydon stations. Plenty of free parking there.

Jos took breaking the swords as a personal challenge and spent an hour bending them all last night. So I think they're probably ok!

If its any use I could probably bring our netball bibs - no numbers just positions - but at least we could pin the numbers to those rather than people's clothes.
If you want I'll take care of numbers and just bring them along on Monday.

Hi all,
Hope you're looking forward to the workshop on Monday. Please keep inviting friends and spreading the word.
Please remember to arrive by 7.15pm. Here's the plan for the evening:
7.15 - Ravens arrive, sort out the room and bring some water up from the kitchen (if there are any jugs available)
7.30 - Welcome from me and ask about levels of experience, split into groups
7.40 - ravens DERT dance
7.45 - stepping
7.55 - teaching
8.30 - break for cake (Nic and Sue), info on joining the team (mailing list from Nikki, money from Rachel), ravens dance
8.45 - teaching
9.15 - displays
9.30 - pub (and encourage people to join!)
I want to plan to have 3 groups so that we can accommodate 6 - 15 people. If we have fewer than 6 we'll amalgamate the groups. The
groups, assuming everyone can come, will be:
Teacher = Ffion, dancers = 1) Hannorah, 2) x, 3) x, 4) Sinead, 5) Sue
Teacher = Rachel, dancers = 1) Jo, 2) Janet, 3) x, 4) x, 5) Josie
Teacher = Lindsey, dancers = 1) Aisha, 2) x, 3) Nic, 4) x, 5) katherine
We'll try and teach every group these figures, with the option of adding extra DERT dance figures depending on how well it's going:
Walk on, step in 4s, clash
Single guard in 8s
Open ring for glass into haymarket
Moving fixy
Lock
Fourth corner
Outward facing ring and 5 person lock to finish
Does anyone have access to numbered bibs, perhaps from a sports team? These would be useful for marking out numbers when we display the dance. If not we can improvise with paper, a marker pen and safety pins!
See you on Sunday / Monday,
Ffion x

I know we're no morris side, but would we wish to represent ourselves thus? (And to point out that there are other forms of traditional English dance)

costumes
I’ve seen this on Facebook and the MDDL. Perhaps the
team wants to participate?
"The Museum of British Folklore has launched a new
initiative to represent the wide variety of Morris sides within the UK. Any
teams wishing to take part will be sent a blank figure to decorate with their
team kit. The idea being that over time, the collection will grow into an
original and unique visual record created by the people who participate in the
dance. "

Hi all,
Well done last night - we did some good work and I'm looking forward to dancing both dances at the weekend.
I realised I didn't give you any more information about the Iranian event we've been invited to dance at at SOAS. The event is 7-10pm in the main SOAS lecture / performance hall on Saturday 14 December. The first half is Iranian music and the second is more diverse, including some sets from some of the ceilidh band members. No fee but we can do a collection.
If you need any more information let me know and I'll go back to Peyman. If you don't need any more information please fill in your availability on the sheet asap!
Thanks,
Ffion x
