Hi All,
I've just been checking my budget and I'm afraid to say I can't afford to come to rapper until after christmas, my weekly budget can't stretch that far after having had to buy yet more books etc.
I should be fine next month; I've a bigger loan installment and I've a job lined up at home for over christmas, but until the week commencing the 7th January I won't be able to attend.
Really sorry this is such late notice! Hope to see you all reasonably soon. On the up-side I'll be returning with.proper shoes!

Hi everyone,
As I won't be able to make the AGM tomorrow I thought I'd send some comments and discussion points in advance. My opinions are in red and my suggestions for extra discussion points are in blue. Hope these are helpful and that you have a fun evening.

> Hi ladies,
>
We are in the
process of putting together the agenda for our first ever AGM! As I said
last Monday, the AGM will be on Monday 19th November, in the
Wetherspoon's, instead of practice - we'll start promptly at 8pm. I think
I will try and get there earlier for dinner, so do join me if you want.
Here's a first
outline. Do email if you want to add things / have opinions / etc. I
realise a couple of people can't make it, so that just makes it more
important that those people can express their views on the email list first.
1. APOLOGIES
Me! I’m very sorry but I can’t be there as it’s the evening of The
Reading Agency’s 10th anniversary lecture. As I’ve been organising
it and need to be there to try and tactfully extract money out of wealthy attendees
there’s no way I can get out of it L
2. SECOND DANCE: Do
we want one? If so, should it be more complicated than the current one
(i.e. one "beginners" and one more advanced), where the more
complex one could be a potential DERT dance (see point 3) or a traditional
dance. Or should we just stick to one dance?
I say yes to a
second dance – when you’re doing something like Thrales day or a day time tour
at a festival it’s good form to be able to do two different dances. I wouldn’t
be in favour of a trad dance as our current dance features bits from most trad
ones so they’d look too similar (unless we did Beadnell which is a bit dull or
Merton in which everything is backward and therefore mega confusing). Another
negative about trad dances is that others will do them – if we write our own it’s
almost guaranteed to be unique. I think a second dance should either be more complex
(and therefore suitable for DERT) or a more open, slower and beautiful one with
little stepping (suitable for dancing outside on a Morris style crawl when you
have to dance on concrete or flagstone but have a nice open space to play
with). If the second dance was a slow, beautiful one we’d probably want to
increase the complexity of the first one for DERT. I think it would be nice for
everyone to bring the names / shapes of figures they’ve seen and liked at
workshops, dance outs like Thrales day and youtube (if, like me, you’re sad
enough to spend your lunch breaks watching rapper online!) to a practice and we
could start to build another dance that way. It would be important not to
forget about the first dance in the process of putting together a new dance as
dance 1 will still be our default dance for some time so practices would have
to be carefully managed between perfecting dance 1 and creating dance 2.
2a. CHARACTER: I don’t think we can
continue leaning on Simon for ever. The character can be an integral part of the team – Clive goes to all Thrales practices
and you don’t see them out without him - so this might be a good time to
discuss how we’d like our character(s) to act and fit in with the team. In an
ideal world do we want one, two or none? Male or female? What kit would they
wear? Do we want to use the traditional calling on song / adapt it / create
something new? Should it be one of us so we can incorporate stepping and 6 / 7
sword locks or someone external?
My personal view is that it would be good to have
a woman who isn’t necessarily already part of the team and who is confident,
fun and can commit to coming to a few practices now and then to develop a
routine that fits well with the dance. No idea where to start looking for that
person though! The minimum you need is someone to announce to the crowd who you
are and what you’re going to do. This can be someone in the team who’s about to
dance but that’s not ideal.
3. DERT: are we interested in going in 2013?
If so, what should we dance?
I think we should go to DERT 2013; it’s fun,
you see lots of other teams and therefore get more ideas about how you want to
dance and make new friends, you spread the word about the team, and you get useful
feedback from the judges. Working towards a competition is good for focussing
the team on standardising style and perfecting technique and gives you
something very definite to aim for. I think the standard we’re dancing at now
plus another 4ish months of practice means we definitely wouldn’t embarrass ourselves.
One option to consider is going as a display only team which means you get to
take part but don’t get judged. Personally though I think we should just go for
it and enter properly. A potential negative to bear in mind for your discussion
is that, again, practices have to be carefully managed in the run up to DERT –
not everyone will be able to make the event so there’s a fine balancing act
between making sure your DERT team are on top form and giving everyone a chance
at taking part in and enjoying practices.
4. REGULARITY OF
TOURS / DANCEOUTS: Do we want to have a monthly tour? Should we have one
before Christmas?
I think we should definitely have them
regularly. A least once every two months but not more than once a month so
perhaps once every 6 weeks. We might prefer to say every x Friday of the month
or we might want to set a new date for each crawl in case that offers people
more flexibility. I think it would be nice to have one before Christmas but the
date would have to be set very soon to make sure enough of us are available.
5. TREASURER'S
REPORT / SUBS: Announcement of current bank balance. Discussion of
potential ways to change subs - we're currently losing money on the hall
each week, which isn't really sustainable in the long term. A monthly
subscription rather than weekly? (This has the benefit of people being
able to do electronic transfer or standing order.) Update on cost of kit and how much we owe someone for it?
I’m happy to do a Standing Order.
6. INSURANCE / JOINING OPEN MORRIS / THE
FEDERATION: Which one do we want to join? For either, the subscription
for the year goes in in January. (For those of you who don't know, these
are both national organisations who provide insurance for folk dance
teams - insurance which we should probably have and currently don't!)
Don’t have much opinion on this. As far as I
know the Fed is bigger but I had a quick look through the open morris’ list of
members and they seem to have a lot of the younger female teams e.g. silver
flame, rapper rascals. Don’t know if there’s any particular reason for this.
7. ELECTIONS:
Positions up for grabs are listed below. I think the only real
limitation is that the Practice Organiser, Secretary and Treasurer all ought to be different people, as those jobs
require a good deal of work each.
8. AOB
Positions for
elections:
1. PRACTICE
ORGANISER: Runs weekly Monday practices, decides what's going to happen
each Monday. Can delegate teaching etc. as she sees fit, but is in
overall charge.
I’d like to stand for this position. I’ve been
dancing and watching rapper for about 7 years and I’ve danced with 4 teams in
all positions. I therefore know lots of figures and stepping variations but,
more importantly, I know that there are many ways you can dance the same figure
e.g. there are at least 3 different swordhandling styles for single guard. I
think this knowledge will really help as we develop from being a team which
knows how to get through a dance into a team which looks precise, snappy and
confident whilst dancing. I’ve had some very good rapper teachers so I also
know exercises and techniques to improve precision within the team. If there’s
anything I love more than rapper dancing it’s seeing other people get better at
rapper dancing; I really enjoyed hearing people say ‘oh I get it now’ or ‘I
didn’t actually realise I was supposed to be doing X on beat X until you
pointed it out just then’ when Lindsey asked me to help teach and critique some
figures a few weeks ago. If I were practice organiser I’d try and listen to
everyone’s opinions about how they thought the dances were looking (I’d try and
bring my camera regularly to video us as I think seeing yourself dance from
outside the set is a great way of improving), what they wanted to work more on
and I’d hope to be able to put together our new dance in a democratic and collaborative
way.
2. SECRETARY:
Responds to email requests as they come in to the info@email address.
Keeps a record of who has signed up to what. Chases people on a
Monday to sign up to things if necessary.
3. TREASURER: Fairly self explanatory!
Collecting subs and paying the church are the two main things. Keeping
money in order generally.
Happy to stand for this is no other takers but
equally happy for someone else to do it!
4. TOUR ORGANISER:
If we do have regular tours (which we should) this person would make
sure that somebody is organising each one - liaising with pubs to make
sure it's ok. They can (and should) delegate each tour to a different
person.
5. WARDROBE
MISTRESS: Keeps the spare fabric left over from making the kit.
Organises getting new kit sewn up for newbies / kit replaced as necessary.
Doesn't have to do all the sewing herself!
6. WEBSITE / EMAIL: Keeps the tech-y side of
things up to date and looking smart.
7. CAKE MONITOR:
Makes sure somebody is making cake for each Monday!
Don’t mind doing
this but it sounded as if there’d be stiff competition for this position at
practice last week so happy for someone more passionate about cake to do it!
Please note that
none of these roles are do-it-all yourself - they can (and should!)
involve some delegating. Also, none of them (with the possible exception
of Practice Organiser) are roles in which the person in question needs
to be an experienced rapper dancer. And apart from the three main ones, people
can have more than one!
Other possible roles which I'm not sure
whether they are worth having include: hall liaison (to correspond
specifically with St Michael's - Lindsey's currently been doing this)
and publicity officer (we should probably have a facebook page, etc.
which they can keep up to date).
Bag woman / sword fairy: responsible for
looking after the swords (making sure they’re cleaned after every use) and
bringing them to practices and dance outs.
Crawl roles: In addition to organising the
route of the crawl in advance there needs to be someone in charge of going to
the bar and asking for the music to be turned off, someone (can be the same) to
keep an eye on the time and give 5 minute calls when it’s time to leave, and someone
deciding who is dancing.
NB. Often a squire / foreman / leader /
captain is the bag man, chair of ‘business’ during practice break and of AGM and EGMs, main
decision maker (e.g. if a festival needs a quick decision on a booking), tour
organiser (as described in Rachel’s notes above) and does some of the crawl
roles I’ve just mentioned. The suggested role of Practice Organiser here
combines some of the foreman roles with teacher but this is often separate. In
fact all of the teams I’ve previously dances with (as well as Thrales) have
separate roles for foreman and teachers; worth considering whether we want to
split like this or do it our own way.
Musician: Just a reminder that Nicky said
she’s happy to have co-musicians
If there is
anything on either of these lists which you think I have forgotten, please email the list and add it
on. If you have any comments on any of the AGM points and want to get
the ball rolling now, please do!
Otherwise, I shall
see you all soon!
Thanks for getting
to the bottom of this,
Rachel :)

Subject: [TR Committee] Fancy coming down to Canterbury?
To: info(a)towerravens.org.uk
Hi there,
I'm James, a member of the Seven Champions Molly Dancers. We are planning
an evening pub tour of Canterbury one Thursday in December and I wondered
if you'd like to come? Starting at 8ish, we'll be visiting at least 4 or 5
pubs doing one dance at each finishing at the Foundry brew pub.
Canterbury is 55 minutes on the train from St Pancras and we'd happily pass
any collection we get over to you to go towards travel costs.
Anyway, let me know if you'd all be up for it... If not, hopefully see you
soon.
All the best,
James

Dear all,
I hear there was a bit of discussion last night regarding events, and we
thought the best thing to do would be to put details into an email. So:
1. THRALES DAY OF DANCE
The Thrales Day of Dance is Sunday 11th November. It is held in one pub,
the Prince William Henry, just south of Blackfriars Bridge. The day itself
is actually an afternoon event - it starts at 12.30 (so maybe meeting 12?)
and goes on until 4ish. It is a very relaxed, cheerful sort of event.
There are usually 8/9 teams there, so we'll probably only do one or two
dances - this may make taking large numbers of people rather silly, as
they'll just hang around and do nothing.
2. MABEL GUBBINS DAY
Mabel Day is Sunday 2nd December (why are both of these Sundays?), and is
held in Oxford. We haven't yet been given a definite start time, but it's
a bit of a tour round pubs in Oxford during the day, probably finishing
around 4ish, and again very low key and relaxed. A bigger team for this
could be useful, as it'll be a full day of dancing.
I believe Lindsey asked for replies by the end of the week, so if you could
reply by Friday night, that'd be great. Personally, I can't do Mabel Day
but I can do Thrales DoD.
Thanks in advance,
Rachel :)
Hi all
I can do Thrales day
Possibly Mabel G Day at a push

Hiya,
Practice as usual on Monday. I won't be there, as I've got to go to
Cambridge with work, but Lindsey and Nikki should be as normal. St
Michael's at 8pm :)
Hope you all have fun!
Rachel
Hi all
I can't make tonight either... Sorry!
Hope to see you next week.
Did you still want someone to help with designs for logo / website etc? Going to be seeing my friend on Friday who does illustration so any ideas send my way...

Hi All
Think the excitement of Friday night went to my head, or rather my stomach. I've been feeling pretty ropey all weekend, so think I'm going to have to give tonight's practise a miss.
Hope it goes well. See you next Monday.

Well done ladies - last night was awesome!
Just had the collection results in from Jon, and it totals £186.86,
27euro cents, 25 american cents, 2 czech koruna, a blue feather and an
old 50p, half of which will come to us. Huzzah!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday. We should hopefully have
a newbie or two as well, so that will be really nice. I can't make
dinner beforehand due to work, but Lindsey and Nikki should both be in
the Wetherspoons from 6.30pm like last week.
Practice in St Michael's as normal, dinner in the Cross Keys 'spoons next door.
See you all on Monday, and well done us again!
Rachel :)
Hi everyone,
I was going to send a link to show you where the Betsy Trotwood is but it's below as we'll be dancing there anyway. Like Rachel says, I'll be there from around 5 as my office is literally next to the pub so see you there if you fancy coming for tea.
See you all tomorrow!

Hi ladies,
Couple of points for this week's email:
1. PRACTICE ON MONDAY
This will be in St Michael's Cornhill like last week. Since it is a nice
room with a nice floor which we seem to like, we are hoping to use it as
our new permanent venue. :)
Practice will be split between running the dance through and doing last
minute fittings for a few people's skirts (though hopefully this won't take
too long), so please try to be on time.
The church is here, if you didn't make it last week:
http://www.st-michaels.org.uk/contact.html
It's a little fiddly to find, so do ring if you get lost!
We will be in the Wetherspoons next door from about 6.30/6.45pm onwards for
dinner - do join us there if you want some food. (
http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-crosse-keys).

2. DANCE OUT ON FRIDAY (12th)
As you all know, Friday 12th is our first danceout. Now it's getting
closer, here's a few more details.
We will be meeting at 7.15pm at the Castle pub in Clerkenwell (
http://www.thecastlefarringdon.co.uk/findus/), and will hopefully dance
there too (although that's still tbc). As you can see on the map, it's
just round the corner from Farringdon tube. The rest of the tour will be
around this area. The exact pubs will be confirmed early next week, and
I'll post it once it's known.
Simon from Thrales has very kindly agreed to Tommy for us. This means that
he'll be wandering around the outside of the set whilst we're dancing
talking loudly to the audience. Try to just ignore him and get on with the
dance. :)
We'll also be collecting in the pubs, so hopefully we can add some money to
the Ravens pot.
I am expecting: Rachel, Jo, Lindsey, Nic, Josie, Hannorah, Ffion, Sue and
Nikki. Let me know if that's wrong in any way. If you do want to invite a
friend along to watch, feel free (though I think personally I'd find that
rather scary!)

3. KIT
If you haven't already bought your tshirt from H&M, make sure you do so
before Friday!
You're also going to need a pair of black tights - 40/60 denier so that
they're nice and opaque please.
Please bring as much of your kit as you have with you on Friday (wearing it
if possible - there may be limited changing space in the pub toilets). If
you don't have something because it's not been finished yet, we'll bring it
on Friday and you can change there. You will need: tshirt, skirt,
petticoat, net belt/sash, black tights, shoes.

Hmm, I think that's all for now.
See you all on Monday!
Rachel :)
Hi all,
Practice is on this Monday! It'll be at St Michael Cornhill Church, near
Bank/Monument Tube.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=214385215377759623824.0004…
The main entrance to the church will be shut. To get to the practise room,
walk down the alley to the side of the church, turn left after the Jamcia
Winehouse Pub, and then turn left through a metal gate into a grassy
courtyard. The door is on the right of the courtyard, but you should see us
by then.
The Pub this week will be the Ship again - as normal, as a few of us have
some loyalty cards to fill (meeting at 6.30). This is likely to changein
future weeks, so keep your ears open.
If you've not yet got your tshirt, don't forget to do that, and Jo, Ffion
and Sue - bring your £5's for you're petticoats. They're ready!
See you all then!
Rachel & Linds :)

Hi all,
The video of the dance is up here: http://youtu.be/lMCOBUiz4SQ (or at least
it will be in 34 minutes). It's private, so nobody else can access it.
The website of the Victorian themed speakeasy we were asked to dance in on
Monday is here: http://leyshonbrothers.com/ Looks cool! We'll have to see
if we can arrange a tour around London Bridge area some time soon.
Official email will come out later in the week courtesy of Lindsey.
See you all Monday!
Rachel :)
6. VIDEO
The video that we took last Monday looks amazing! I'm still trying to work
out how to get it onto the computer and then the email list (and having a
spare minute to do that in...), but if I don't manage it by Monday, I'll
bring the camera along to practice. I think it's really interesting to
watch yourself dance, and I know that I picked up a lot of things to work
on myself.
R
Hi all,
Thanks to those of you who made it out on Monday - it was a really good
practice and I think we danced really well. Apologies again to Jo and
Janet who ended up at the church by themselves!
A few things to mention before next week, so this is a long one:
1. NEXT MONDAY'S PRACTICE
Next Monday we will again not be in St Margaret's. Lindsey has managed to
get us studio space just across London Bridge at a place called arch 897 (
http://www.arch897.com/). It will probably just be a one off, but watch
this space on that front. I suggest we meet outside at 8pm. Call me on
07910 836480 if you get lost.

2. KIT SEWING DAY
If you are free tomorrow (Sat 22nd), do come over and help us sew kit.
Even if you don't have a sewing machine, you can be helpful by cutting
things out, etc. We're meeting at mine again (N1 4QH), starting at 11am.
See lots of you then!
- - - - - - - -
3. TSHIRTS
On a related note, if you haven't yet bought your H&M tshirt (I haven't, I
haven't seen a shop yet this week...), don't forget to do that! See
Lindsey's earlier email as to which.
- - - - - - - -
4. DANCE
Various people were asking to have the whole dance written down last week,
so here it is. If there's a particular figure you always get stuck on, try
and think of a little summary for it.
single guard - (try to get round in four, pattern is 1,3,5,2,4)
back 8 - (try to start this when 5 gets to the 10o'clock to 12o'clock
position)
figure 8 - (remember to come straight up to the front each time)
moving fixy
spin
cramper - (don't step out too far, 3 runs really fast!)
nut - (cast from cramper, then make a lock, so 4 and 5 slip the second time)
maryanne - (1 inside the first two times, 5 inside the second two times)
granny knot - (keep the hands neat at the front)
half a curley
fourth corner - (snap the swords down in the line, 2,3,4 squatting left leg
back)
ending - (step for four round the lock, then walk in two to the line, one
single (steppity-step), then step in fours until 1 shouts out!)
- - - - - - - -
5. DIARY DATES
As I think you all know, we'll be on tour for the first time with Thrales
on 12th October, so keep that in your diaries. Thrales weekend, which we
are also hoping to dance at, is the afternoon of Sunday 11th November.
- - - - - - - -
I hope that helps!
Have a good weekend, and see you all on Monday,
Rachel :)
Having been to h&m and questioned a large selection of people, the code
online and the code in store don't match.
You therefore need to look for a 'divided basic's t-shirt' at a cost of
£3.99. I've attached a photo of the label. The magic number is the one on
the top left of the barcodes '081103'.
At present I can't find this on the internet. I can't find the internet
ones in store.
Just keep receipts, and we can always return them if we accidently get
different ones.
Lindsey
My plan was to wonder down to the oxford street store and see which ones
they had in, and looked nice - and then alter the one we're looking at if
there was a better option. If they don't have anything in, we'll have
another think tomorrow.
