Hi All,

I'm not necessarily saying we should host DERT, though I know we've discussed potentially hosting it at some point, probably jointly with Thrales. I just thought I'd share this, as you might like to see that the process for applying to host DERT is becoming much more open - I know some people in the past have felt it has been rather a "behind closed doors" thing. 2021 may be a little soon though...

Open Host Applications – DERT 2021

For fame, glory and the love of beer and gin! Earn eternal glory and bragging rights down the boozer by running the most prestigious event in the rapper calendar.

The DERT Steering Group wants to hear from YOU.

As announced at Sheffield 2018, the Steering Group is formalising the process of applying to host DERT to make it more accessible and transparent. As we look forward to Newcastle 2019 and Lincoln 2020, the bidding for DERT 2021 is now open.

Submissions are welcome from teams, groups of teams or a company of individuals to run the UK’s premier sword dance competition.

WHO

It doesn’t matter if your team is freshly forged or long-established, all we’re looking for is an organised bunch of people with the chops and determination to showcase rapper in their chosen host town or city.

Whether you’ve organised none or three, the DERT Steering Group (DSG) is on hand to provide as much or as little support as you need to get your DERT up and running, and you don’t need to have a fully formed plan at this stage.

HOW

Submissions can be long or short, from a brief email expressing interest, to a full colour prospectus or feature length video presentation; they just need to address the following questions:

  • Who are you?
  • Where do you want to host DERT?
  • What ideas do you have for pubs, venues and accommodation?
  • Why is this the place for DERT 2021?
All submissions will be reviewed by the Steering Group using the criteria below and the hosts for DERT 2021 will be announced at the Sunday meeting at Newcastle 2019.

WHEN

The deadline for submissions is 23:59 on 31st January 2019 and bids should be sent by email to
dert.steering@gmail.com.

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions beforehand.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Good luck!
DERT Steering Group

Selection Criteria:

There are no hard and fast rules for winning the bid to host DERT, but the following factors will be taken into consideration. They’re more what you might call guidelines...

  • Can the applicant group form a viable DERT Organising Committee?
  • Does the host town or city have the pubs, venues, indoor camping and infrastructure required to host DERT?
  • Can the Steering Group be confident that the bid will deliver a successful DERT?
  • Is there a particular event or anniversary that the applicant group would like to mark by hosting DERT?
  • DERT should move freely around the country and as many people as possible should have the opportunity to host it, so we will also ask:
    • Has DERT been held in or near the proposed location within the last 5 years?
    • Has the applicant group organised a DERT within the last 10 years?

NB. Subject to agreement, shortlisted bids not selected to run DERT 2021 may be asked to organise DERT 2022.

Terms & Conditions:

The following boring but necessary conditions apply:

  1. All applicant groups must be based in the UK and their proposed host location situated in or on mainland Britain.
  2. Though not strictly a requirement, applicant groups should be as sane as possible, with no more than one member registered dead for tax purposes.
  3. All members of an applicant group must be over 18 years of age. At a push, they should turn 18 on or before the first day of DERT 2021.
  4. One application per group, unless you really, really want to submit more. (See 2).
  5. For the sake of propriety, bids must not be submitted by members of the DERT Steering Group, though they may be involved and must declare that interest.
  6. No Benedict Cumberbatch.
  7. The DERT Steering Group’s decision is final.
