I'm no expert as you all know, but think shorter swords are definitely a good idea for helping make the set tighter. 

Is there also something to be said for sword-arm length ratios. On average women's arms are shorter than guys right - ergo our swords should be also! :-)

Do think it's interesting that there's not a standard competition length as technically it could set you at an advantage/disadvantage. Mind you, so could your choice of shoe for that, and where do you draw the line? :-)
