Hope you all enjoyed DERT 2019.

Thanks to our trio of Newcastle hosts, the Kingsmen, Sallyport, and Star & Shadow, for organising a tremendous weekend in the Ouseburn valley.

A lot of thought and planning obviously went in to making 2019 such a slick operation and thoroughly enjoyable competition. Our thanks also go to the venues, the judges, and the army of volunteers who kept the wagon rolling during the course of the weekend.

DERT 2020

The DERT caravan now rumbles on to Lincoln where Whip the Cat will be hosting in 2020. Lynne Houston, on behalf of the WtC organisers, gave us an update on their preparations at the Sunday debrief.

You’ll be pleased to know that WtC have not wasted any time. They’ve already secured the services of a gin distillery and a brewery, the aptly named "Cat Asylum". Everything else is gravy...

STEERING GROUP VACANCY

Martin Clarke (Tower Ravens, Sallyport) has stepped down as one of the permanent reps on the steering group, which means we have a vacancy. So if you want to be a regular feature of the steering group and spend more time hanging out with me and Dave Hall, get in touch. The work is not too onerous and it also has its good points.

We’re looking for people with a passion for rapper and a love of DERT, so don’t be shy, get in touch. Women make up 51% of the population, around two thirds of rapper dancers and precisely none of the permanent members of the DSG. We’re keen to hear from you.

We’ll put out something more specific in May, but if you’re really eager and you’d like to put yourself forward right now, then drop us an email, tell us a bit about yourself and what you want to bring to the party.

FUTURE DERT

The DSG ran an open bid for 2021 and we received applications from several teams wanting to host DERT.

Mons Meg submitted the winning bid and they’ll be running 2021 in and around the badlands of Edinburgh and Leith. This marks a welcome return to Scotland and the first time the competition has ventured back since Glasgow 2003.

As part of the bid process, we said we may also allocate 2022. We're pleased to announce that Stone Monkey will be running DERT 2022 in Derby. Congratulations to both teams.

All recent organisers have said they were grateful for having plenty of run-in time to prepare. This point was raised yet again at the debrief. To make sure future organisers have plenty of prep time, we’ll be running another open bid process for 2023 soon. Expect to see more details landing in your inbox in the autumn.

TRADITIONAL COMPETITION

Every team entering the Traditional competition puts a lot of research and hard work into their notation documents. They’re far too good to be kept in a drawer at DERT towers and deserve a wider audience.

So, to celebrate their work, and to make the research available to the rapper world, we’ll be making the documents available on the DSG pages at DERTinfo in the near future. More on this story later.

The Traditional competition has become a hotly contested part of DERT. In the coming months, we'll be working with the 2019 Traditional co-ordinator Sue Rutland and others, to review it and make any necessary changes. Let us know if you want to get involved and be part of the working group.
